Claude Bérenguier passed away

3 September 2024 Off By Anne BRISSAUD

It has been a dark summer for AFTES: following the deaths of Olivier Vion in July, Jean Péra, and Jean-Pierre Pronost in August, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Claude Bérenguier on Friday, August 30, 2024.

It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of his sudden and unexpected passing. Claude was a key figure in the creation of AFTES in 1972, as well as ITA in 1974, where he served as Secretary General for over 30 years.

Claude began his professional career in 1966 at CETU – Centre d’Etudes des Tunnels in Bron/Lyon. He then left the Lyon region in 1980 for Paris, where he worked for three years at the Ministry of Economy and International Affairs. From 1983 to 1989, he joined ENTPE, and the following three years he spent at SETRA – Service d’Etudes Techniques des Routes et Autoroutes. Afterward, he spent four years at CETE Méditerranée (Public Council on Roads, Transportation, Environment, and other infrastructures in the Mediterranean region) before moving on to CODATU – Cooperation for Urban and Peri-Urban Transport Development and Improvement from 1996 to 2000. He ended his professional career at CNAM – Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (National Institute of Technical Sciences).
After a fulfilling career, he retired in 2002 and worked to establish the ITACET Foundation in 2012, where he remained active until his passing.

We will remember Claude as an excellent diplomat, a passionate enthusiast of tunnels and underground spaces, and a man of unwavering dedication.
Claude, our colleague and friend, will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
