Israel’s National Tunnel Authority, NTA, plans to launch tenders during 2020 for the construction of the first phase of a 3-line metro network in Tel Aviv.
In December 2018, the Ministry of Transport presented a project comprising more than 130 km of tunnels and 100 stations. The m1 line will connect the northern and southern peripheral areas, and in particular the neighborhoods of Raanana, Kafar Saba, Bat Yam, Sharon and Tzrifi. The M2 line will establish an east-west connection through the areas of Rosh Ha’ayin, Petah Tikva and Sirkin. The third M3 line will be a semicircular line that will connect the neighborhoods of Bat Yam, Azor, Givat and Yehuda.
The first tender is expected to include the construction of the northern sections of the M1 and M3 lines, which should be operational by 2030. At present, no timetable has been presented for the construction of the M2 line. The total value of the 3 lines is estimated to be between 23 and 34 billion euros. Tel Aviv’s public transportation network is also being expanded with the construction of the green and red light rail lines, partially underground.
In September 2019, contractor China State Construction International Holdings ltd (CSCI), a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), signed a €468.7 million contract with the NTA for the construction of the 4.5 km tunnel section (Lot G3-2) of the green line.
Excavation of the 11 km western section of the red line was completed in September 2018 and two EPB tunnel boring machines, supplied by CREG, were launched for excavation of the eastern section in December 2018. The 23 km Red Line is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2021.
