The award of the three TELT batches is a decisive step in the realization of the Lyon-Turin rail link. The 3 billion euros of contracts will allow 80% of the final structure to be dug.
The 57.5 km Lyon-Turin tunnel will link Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Suse in Italy. The project owner TELT has just awarded three batches for its construction, which represent the French part of the project:
- Lot 1, worth €1.47 billion, to the EIFFAGE Génie Civil, SPIE Batignolles, GHELLA and Cogéis consortium.
From Villarodin-Bourget to the Italian border, the batch includes digging 22 km of tunnel. The duration of the worksite is expected to be 70 months. This worksite will mobilize 700 people at peak. The Group has already carried out part of the preparatory work from the Saint-Martin-la-Porte descent including the SMP4 worksite currently underway.
- Lot 2, worth €1.43 billion, to the Vinci Construction Grands Projets consortium, leader, Dodin Campenon Bernard and VINCI Construction France, and the builder Webuild.
From Saint-Martin-la-Porte to Villarodin-Bourget, the batch involves digging 25 km of tunnel with three tunnel boring machines, 21 km of tunnel using the conventional method, and 71 safety shafts and various tunnels. This batch will employ about 1,650 people. The construction site is scheduled to last 5 years (65 months for the first site and 57 months for the second site). Vinci Construction has been working since 2020 on the construction of the 4 shafts of Avrieux
- Lot 3, worth 228 million euros, to the IMPLENIA (CH), Implénia France NGE, Itinera and Rizzani de Eccher consortium.
The section between Saint-Julien-Montdenis and Saint-Martin-La-Porte, represents 3 km to be excavated in difficult conditions over a period of 72 months.
What's next?
The civil engineering work began in July 2015 and is expected to continue until 2028, with the line scheduled to open in 2030.
The tender for the last batch of the project, a 12.5 km tunnel linking the border to Susa in Piedmont, is in the process of being awarded (for the beginning of 2022) for an approximate amount of one billion euros.
A much larger operation ...
This work is part of a larger operation to link Lyon to Turin. Other projects are underway (DUP validated), mainly in France, such as the 78 km mixed passenger/freight line from Lyon to Chambéry and a 62 km freight route between Avressieux and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, mainly underground. These projects are estimated to cost around €8 billion.
